THE STORY OF KOOMI™
A Journey of Belonging and Becoming
KOOMI™ was born from a desire to create what didn’t exist when its founder, Derin Kumi, was coming of age into navigating life and career building:
an intentional space where women could explore wellness, belonging, and indulgence without apology.
At 14, my father announced we were leaving London, England, for Vancouver, Canada—a city I had never heard of before, existing to me only as a dot on a map, distant and unfamiliar. Those early years were far from easy—navigating high school as a newcomer, juggling responsibilities in a single-parent household, and carrying the weight of being the second-born of six siblings. The path wasn’t linear. I left, returned, stumbled, and persisted. Along the way, I unearthed more than resilience—I found the courage to begin again, the strength to gather community where none existed, and the wisdom to craft a future rooted in my own truth.
What I’ve always wanted is bigger than a single career: to leave a legacy of impact, power, and possibility. Nursing was one of the first ways I chose to begin, though the road here included many pivots—turns that shaped me but were not meant to carry me forward, creative detours that taught me perspective, and the life-changing experience of becoming a mother at 21. Each shift reminded me: changing your mind doesn’t mean failure; it means choosing what’s truer for you. That belief continues to ground me in both my clinical work and my creativity. Today, I am a Registered Psychiatric Nurse, working with both youth and adults in the field of mental health, with a particular focus on eating disorders.
So many people and moments have shaped me, but it especially rings true for the women I’ve encountered in my life— grandmothers, mothers, aunts, godmothers, sisters, cousins, and friends—whose voices, presence, and energy carried across generations. Around them, life was always alive: filled with laughter, lessons, debates, and storytelling that sharpened me in ways I still carry today. As a girl, I searched for that same layered energy wherever I could find it—in books, in media, in people, and in anything that gave me a glimpse into lives and ideas beyond my own.
For a long time, those places sustained me. But as social media began to dominate, I felt the absence of that richness. What once felt alive and connective became reduced to filters and fleeting posts, stripped of the depth and authenticity that make us feel truly connected.
KOOMI™ was born from that absence, and from my desire to recreate what I knew to be true: people need depth, connection, and spaces that feel alive.
the founder’s story
I craved something real in a world that often feels performative and fleeting. KOOMI™ is my offering: a philosophy of intentional living, where truth, culture, and conscious luxury meet.
And when I’m not working or building KOOMI™? You’ll likely find me in a restaurant corner or at the beach, happily doing things alone. I’ve never had the patience to wait weeks for schedules to align just to do something I want to do. For me, life is too short not to claim the moments that bring joy—whether in company or on my own. I hold fast to the reminder that it’s okay to change your mind, to begin again, and to shift course when something no longer fits. This is the rhythm of my life: grounded in intention, unafraid—and thriving in my own truth.
